Our wine rack consists of 6 terra cotta clay Wine Tile contained by wrought iron. The unit makes a wonderful gift and will soon be available mailorder.
Large quantities of individual tile are available for constructing wine cellars. Sandkuhl Clay Works, Inc. supplies a terra cotta tile in a unique hexagon shape that stacks quickly and easily into a wall without structural containment.
Our tiles are very different for the Mexican terra cotta and old field tile that quickly host large quantities of mold and other biological forms when placed in a wine cellar. In the manufacturing process, we fire the material to temperatures over 1900°F to achieve very low water absorption (<3%) which prevents mold growth. No water retention--no mold, just lots of thermal mass to moderate temperature fluctuations.
